Advocacy and Outreach for Women Veterans’ purpose is to support the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency with outreach activities for the 44,000+ women of the military that live, work, and raise families in Michigan.
Women are serving at higher rates than ever before and in combat roles, which leads to different challenges when transitioning out of the military. Women veterans are 2-4 times more likely to become homeless than non-veteran women, are 1.8 times more likely to die by suicide than non-veteran women, and 1 in 4 screens positive for military sexual trauma.
Women who have served in the military often do not connect with their identity as veterans and in return, are not connected to the benefits they have earned through their military service. The objectives of Advocacy and Outreach for Women Veterans are to educate the public and connect women to their identity as veterans, to benefits earned through service, and to a community that supports them.
Outreach activities include a variety of community events, conferences, retreats, and listening sessions statewide.
